Chronic Anemia as First Clinical Manifestation of a Prolactin-secreting Pituitary Macroadenoma in a Male Patient

A 58-year-old man was studied for mild chronic anemia of 6 years' duration. Familial and personal history of the patient was irrelevant and he took no medication. He complained only of erectile dysfunction for the past 10 years. Initial blood count showed a mild normocytic and normochromic anemia (hemoglobin 12.1 g/dL, normal range [N] 13.0-17.0; hematocrit 34.2%, N 40-54; mean corpuscular volume 89.4 fL, N 82-98; mean corpuscular hemoglobin [MCH] 31.0 pg, N 27-31; MCH concentration 35.5 g/dL, N 32-37, with normal white blood cell (4600/mm3, N 4000-11,000) and platelet (123,000/mm3, N 140,000-450,000) counts. On physical examination, his weight was 76.2 kg, height 164 cm, blood pressure 130/90 mm Hg, and heart rate 64 beats per minute. The patient had loss of facial, axillary, and pubic ha...

Nothing fishy about Seaver’s ‘For Cod and Country’

You want to eat more fish. Ironically for the conscientious consumer, that has become more difficult to do, thanks to a wave of confusing information. Modern seafood cookbooks must explain and enlighten as well as offer accessible recipes; some have risen to this challenge better than others.Barton Seaver has hit the right notes with his first cookbook, “For Cod and Country” (Sterling Epicure, $30; 175 recipes). For the Washington chef, preparing seafood remains a personal enterprise. Only now, he has the simultaneous pulpits of bound volume, television (his recent “In Search of Food” series on cable’s Ovation Network) and a Web series through National Geographic, where he is a fellow.Read full article >> (Source: Wash Post Health)

[Personal View] New approaches to the assessment of vaccine herd protection in clinical trials

SummaryCriteria for the introduction of new vaccines into routine public health practice are becoming increasingly stringent. For vaccines that are expensive and those that provide moderate protection, the ability to confer herd protection could be crucial to policy deliberations about vaccine introduction. Traditionally, herd protection has been assessed after a vaccine is introduced, delaying the availability of data on herd effects to inform decisions about vaccine introduction. New methodological developments now provide the possibility to assess herd protection before the introduction of a vaccine into public health programmes. (Source: The Lancet Infectious Diseases)

Understanding whiplash injury and prevention mechanisms using a human model of the neck.

Authors: Ivancic PC, Xiao M Various models for rear crash simulation exist and each has unique advantages and limitations. Our goals were to: determine the neck load and motion responses of a human model of the neck (HUMON) during simulated rear crashes; evaluate HUMON's biofidelity via comparisons with in vivo data; and investigate mechanisms of whiplash injury and prevention. Therapy lets paralysed man stand again

ConclusionThese are promising results from the treatment of one young man with paraplegia following a car accident. They demonstrate that, following assisted standing and stepping training for a two-year period, surgical implantation of electrodes below the site of his spinal injury allowed him to regain some muscle control during sessions of electrical stimulation. This stimulation allowed some activation of the nervous pathways in the lower spinal cord that were spared following the injury, activating the muscles sufficiently enough to let him stand for a brief period and regain some leg movements.Given that improvements in movement only occurred while stimulation was switched on this technique should not be considered to be a cure for paralysis. It should also be highlighted that it d...
