Reducing Risk of IAN Injury During SSRO

The recent article by Yoshioka et al in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery provides important clinical data about the anatomic position of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and its risk of injury during mandibular sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). The authors' research documents the exact position of the IAN from computed tomography images. This information is not routinely obtained preoperatively in the evaluation of all orthognathic surgery patients at the present time, however. (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)
